Not sure which loader is the right one for you? We often get asked, what is better – a petrol or diesel loader?
Whether you choose a petrol or diesel loader, really depends on your individual application. Generally, before buying your compact loader and deciding which engine is the right choice, you should really take some time to ask yourself the following questions:
What type of fleet do you currently operate – petrol or diesel loaders?
You may want to stick with the fuel that’s most readily available – or common to your fleet. If you currently operate all petrol-powered or diesel-powered equipment, you may prefer to expand your fleet with the same fueled machine. Also consider the availability of diesel in your area, and your degree of familiarity using the fuel.
What is your typical work environment?
- When working in a high-altitude area a diesel engine may be a better fit. Gasoline engines can run a richer air/fuel combination due to less oxygen in the air at high altitudes. The difference in air density provides lower combustion temperature and pressure, resulting in reduced horsepower.
- In tight spaces, wheeled Kanga loaders improves maneuverability due to their short wheelbase design, which also allows for easy negotiation of mounds, curbs, and rough terrain.
- When traveling over long distances, the Kanga’s operator safety cell, ergonomic controls and internal bump protection allow increased operator comfort, safety and minimize hand & arm fatigue.
What attachments will you typically operate?
- Compare a loader’s hydraulic system and flow (expressed as “litres per minute”) with the net horsepower it will provide attachments. A diesel engine will deliver more torque, giving you increased pulling/digging force when using attachments in very aggressive in harder ground conditions.
- If you are primarily moving materials (e.g. mulch, rock, pallets, or carrying supplies to your jobsite), a petrol machine may be your best choice. You’ll be operating the unit for shorter periods of time and will not require the torque efficiencies of a diesel engine.
What is your life expectancy of the mini loader?
Diesel engines function on compression ignition (as opposed to spark ignition), which creates less stress on components. As a result, they tend to last longer than spark-ignition engines under equivalent duty. This factor helps justify the higher up-front cost of diesel loaders. Diesel engines are known for their durability and reliability.
Fuel Usage per an hour of operation.
Diesel is less volatile than petrol and thus needs higher compression and special heating elements in the combustion chamber to make cold starts possible. Once it’s up and running, though, a diesel engine is extremely economical and will use around 30 per cent less fuel than a comparable petrol unit.
Who will service your machine?
Consider the availability of petrol or diesel mechanics, who can service your equipment.
What’s your climate?
Operating a diesel machine in cold weather requires certain precautions, such as using the correct diesel fuel type and pre-heating the system to ensure the engine starts properly. In addition, you must maintain a 50/50 water-to-anti-freeze ratio in the radiator to prevent the engine block from cracking.
Experienced or novice users?

Diesel powered loaders as a rule would hold a better re-sale value then a petrol loader, which needs to be consideration upon purchase.
